I’m off to Wimbledon on Friday and as I write there is one Brit - Andy Murray - still in the singles. He demolished Frenchman Richard Gasquet yesterday in straight sets to win a place in the last eight. But being a British tennis fan isn’t easy - in fact it’s mind-blowingly difficult -  as there hasn’t been a male singles champion in my lifetime. Henman was popular with the crowds but never looked likely to win and now it’s Murray’s turn. He’s playing well and maybe if we are ever going to have a men’s champion in my lifetime (we did have a ladies champion once - Virginia Wade in 1977!) then this could be the year. But with the likes of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic still in the field I’m not holding my breath. The good news is that I’m at Wimbledon with my sister who is a real Champers and strawberries fan so if the tennis starts to loose its lustre there are compensations. In the meantime, I have a tennis match to play myself tonight in our local league. We are expected to win but admittedly the pressures aren’t so great as those on Murray. But then, the rewards for winning aren’t (quite) so great either. The total prize money split between winners of the various tournaments at Wimbledon this year is a mere £14.6m. For us it’s a cold beer if we’re lucky - we know how to live…
