Finally got back running again after a five-week layoff with an Achilles tendon injury. The physio said all along that when I could pass the hop test I could get back on the road. That consisted of standing on the toes of the injured leg and hopping up and down on the spot. Once this could be done without pain in the affected area, the treatment can be declared successful. Surprising how much fitness can be lost in just a few weeks. It takes such a long time to build up and yet it goes in no time at all. I am only 11 weeks away from my next marathon, so there is a lot of work to be done. And to make matters worse, during my enforced absence from the streets I was still eating as much as I do when I am running 40 miles a week, so have about 10lbs to lose to get back to my fighting weight. The physio told me to swim or cycle during the layoff. That is fine except for the fact that I hate swimming and I do not have a bike. Anyway, I am doing eight-milers with ease now, so the comeback has begun. -Phil Clegg.
