I’ve had a sad few days as I’ve had to say goodbye to George, our 14-year-old King Charles Cavalier dog who just reached the end of a long, and very happy life. We collected him from the kennels in 1997 as an eight-week-old puppy and he shivered in my arms all the way to his new home as we travelled back on the motorway. Once he arrived home however, he soon perked up when he realised what a good move he’d made. He was somewhat pampered, but because of his totally loving nature was specially fussed by all the old people and children who met him and of course by me! Fourteen is a good age for a Cavalier but that didn’t make me feel any better when the vet told me I had to perform one last act of kindness for him and let him go. He didn’t shiver on the last day but just looked up at me with totally trusting eyes as I held him tight while the vet administered his last dose. Everyone says it was the right thing to do - but it didn’t feel right to me.
