Green light for Burns museum

A £5.8m grant from the UK Heritage Lottery Fund has been awarded to contribute to the development of a museum honouring 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns.

The £20m proposal will see land, including the cottage where he was born in South Ayrshire, turned into a museum which will house the entire Burns collection of manuscripts, correspondences and artefacts under one roof.

Set to open in 2010, the project will also feature educational facilities and a refurbishment of the Burns Monument.
