The UK casino industry has 143 operating locations, according to statistics released by the Gambling Commission last week.

The market remains dominated by three companies, Gala with 27 casinos, Grosvenor (part of Rank) with 32 casinos and Genting Casinos with 45 locations.  Next largest is London Clubs International with 11 casinos.

The number of employees in the British industry is 14,204. The number of ‘visits’ to British casinos in the year (to March 31, 2009) was 16.6 million, an increase of 400,000 over the previous year. Gross profit from gaming machines in the casinos was £120.5m.

Of the games used in the market, the most popular in terms of drop was American roulette at £2,248m, followed by blackjack at £775.1m and electronic roulette at £718.3m. These three games dominate the market.

The number of gaming machines operating in British casinos totalled 2,500, an increase of 24 per cent over the previous year, due mainly to an easing of restrictions on numbers permitted.
