Wayne Shaw, the recently resigned reserve goalkeeper for Sutton United, who were knocked out of FA Cup’s fourth round by Arsenal on Monday, is the subject of a Football Association investigation over suggestions that during the match he breached rules on betting in football.

Ahead of the tie, Sun Bets had been offering odds of 8-1 that Shaw would eat a pie at some point during the game.

Shaw - an unused substitute for the match - told the Guardian that, alerted to the odds by teammates, he engaged in what he called a “bit of banter” and duly obliged by eating a meat and potato pie in full view with eight minutes of the game remaining.

It has proven to be a costly snack for the ’keeper, who resigned from his position at the club on Tuesday and who is now reportedly the subject of investigations from both the FA and the Gambling Commission.

There are strictly enforced rules that prohibit those involved in professional football from betting on the sport. Shaw is not accused of that but may fall foul of FA rules regarding enabling others to bet.

The player has said that he did not know anyone that had placed such a bet but the FA and Gambling Commission may yet sanction him or the club.
