Bookmakers will be hopeful after data collected by global payments leader Worldpay showed that the volume of online transactions spiked by 23 per cent during last year’s final.

With the game’s first 90 minutes yielding a 1-1 draw the data also showed the popularity of in-play betting, as fans placed thousands of bets during extra time.

Alan Watson, vice president of gambling at Worldpay, said: “The Champions League Final is the biggest club match in the world. With these two famous teams set to put on a mouthwatering show, fans around the world are anxious to get a piece of the action and bookies will need to ensure they are ready to accommodate the impending spike in transactions.”

This year’s Champions League Final will be played between four-time champions Barcelona and two-time winners Juventus. The match will be held in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on Saturday, June 6, and is expected to draw 75,000 fans to the stadium, with an additional estimated 380 million viewers from 200 countries watching on television.
