Camelot, the UK’s state lottery provider, saw total sales of National Lottery tickets in the 2016/17 financial year to March 31 of £6.9bn, the fourth-best total in the history of the lottery, which goes back to 1994.

The figure was a fall of 8.8 per cent on last year’s final total of £7.5bn.

A strategic review is being held by Camelot, looking at four key business areas: commercial plans to boost performance; further investment in technology; the present business structure; and long-term succession.

Of the 2016/17 sales total, over £5.4bn went in prizes and donations to good causes. Around 95 per cent of its revenue goes back into society.

The statistics released by Camelot shows that in the year it created 393 new millionaires and returned £3.9bn to players. It also gave £1.6bn to good causes, over 500,000 individual projects across the country.
