The park, located in Coomera, Queensland, has been closed while an investigation is undertaken.

Queensland Ambulance spokesman Gavin Fuller said that two people had been thrown from the ride and two had been trapped inside.

In a statement, Craig Davidson, chief executive officer of Dreamworld, said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this and our hearts and our thoughts go to the families involved and their loved ones.”

The Thunder River Rapids ride takes visitors along a fast-moving artificial river on circular rafts, each with six chairs mounted to it.
