Kauffman formed Exidy - short for Excellence in Dynamics - in 1973 in Palo Alto, California, shortly after the Atari game Pong opened up the video games business.

A succession of hit games came out of the Exidy factory, including the controversial Death Race in 1976. Other titles of note included Crossbow (1983), Cheyenne (1984) and another controversial game, Chiller, in 1986.

Exidy was also responsible for Fax in 1983, Astro Chase (1984), Top Gunner (1986) and Who Dunnit (1988).

Kauffman, who died on July 3, is survived by his wife, Virginia, and four children.
