FEWER people will go into arcades today just to play coin-operated games. The appeal of redemption, novelties, air hockey, kiddie rides, video games and other products in this sector remain undiminished, but there is increasing evidence that alone, they are not enough.

This is the product of today’s diversity in entertainment. Competition from home video games was almost the death of the video game in arcades 30 years ago; now that effect is compounded by mobile games and further complicated by demands on the pocket from other forms of entertainment.
