Solihull Council's licensing committee decision on Tuesday to award its large casino licence to Genting UK was "an important day" for the local community, it has been claimed.

The £120m Resorts World complex aims to make the NEC in Birmingham an entertainment destination and, when it opens in 2014, will create over 1,100 jobs and bring an estimated £25m to the local economy each year.

Peter Brooks, executive deputy chairman of Genting UK, said: "The approved project will bring substantial benefits to Solihull and the wider region in terms of job creation and regeneration and will play a key role in the future prosperity and success of the NEC.

"This is the next step in our strong partnership with the NEC and we very much welcome the confidence shown in us by Solihull Council. We are delighted to be able to move on to the next stage of our plans and to making Resorts World happen for the benefit of the borough and its communities."

Genting now plans to apply for planning permission shortly.
