Japanese lawmakers this week reopened the debate on a bill to legalise casinos with Liberal Democratic Party members saying the party hopes to pass the legislation by December 14.

According to Japan Times, Liberal Democratic Party Diet affairs chief Wataru Takeshita said the LDP wants to have the bill pass through the committee on Friday, December 2, and to be voted on December 6.

Asia Gaming Brief quoted a source as saying the bill is expected to pass through the House of Representatives on the 6th, but stop at the House of Councillors as it won't likely pass before the close of the Diet session on the 14th.

Should LDP push through the bill, it “would directly defy the main opposition party, the majority of the public, and perhaps even their coalition partner Komeito.”

“Most analysis assumes the government isn't going to force this through,” the source added.
