As Thailand’s casino debate intensifies, the government is planning to launch an online survey to gauge public opinion on legalising casinos in the country, Malaysian media reports.

According to the Bernama news agency, Royal Thai police chief Somyot Poompanmoung said a website outlining the pros and cons of legal casinos would launch on September 1.

Speaking to reporters, he said the survey will be discussed by Thailand’s National Reform Council and, if people were in favour of the proposal, the government would then devise plans for how to spend the revenue.

Poompanmoung suggested that legalising casinos could generate THB400bn to THB500bn per year (around $12bn).

Thai prime minister Prayuth Chan-cha told local media that the government had no stance on the casino issue.
