Three new casinos are expected to open along Cambodia’s southern border with Vietnam in the coming months.

The casinos will be located in the Cambodian province of Takeo and are aiming to open in mid-April. Two of the casinos have completed construction and are working towards complying with all the requirements before they can be granted operating licences. The third has yet to begin construction.

While it is illegal for locals to gamble, Cambodia’s gaming industry has been propped up by Vietnamese - who are also not allowed to gamble in their home country - crossing the borders to spend money in the casinos..

Vietnam is the largest source market for arrivals to Cambodia. Last year saw 900,000 of its nationals enter the country. Last year, the gambling industry generated $25m in tax revenues, a year-on-year increase of 15 per cent.
