We will soon get an idea how tough the Macau government will be on granting table games to the new multi-billion dollar resorts as Galaxy announced that its phase two will open on May 27.

That is ahead of the previously expected mid-year opening. Galaxy has not been told how many table games it will get, but the number has been widely speculated at around 200 to 250, or about half the number upon which phase two is based.

However, Galaxy expects the number granted will be enough to generate an acceptable profit, Phoebe Tse of Barclays said. Also opening on May 27 will be Broadway Macau, the renovated former Grand Waldo.

In keeping with the destination resort theme and de-emphasising gambling, Galaxy’s phase two will feature 250-room Ritz Carlton and 1,000-room J W Marriott hotels, a 200-plus store upscale shopping mall and two Michelin star restaurants: 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana and Fook Lam Moon.

Broadway will have 350 hotel rooms, an outdoor dining area and a total of 40 restaurants and 20 retail outlets. Wanting to remind everyone that Galaxy is making a considerable investment, the company pointed out that it now has spent $5.8bn in Macau, a number that will reach $13bn when phases three and four are completed.
