Revenues from the 11 casinos in the US state of Mississippi fell 2.9 per cent to $175.1m in August, down from $180.3m in July 2014.

The total monthly revenue was also down year on year, falling two per cent from the August 2013 total of $179.m, according to figures published by the Mississippi Department of Revenues.

To date in 2014, the land-based casino industry in the state has generated revenues of more than $1.4bn.

There was better news for south Mississippi's casinos with earnings of $94m up $4m year on year and the highest August total since 2010.

Two casinos have closed in the state this year - the Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi, which shut last week, and Harrah's in Tunica (pictured), which closed its doors in June.
