The German-Swiss consortium comprising the Gauselmann Group and its partner Casino Baden AG has won its bid to develop a casino in the Austrian capital Vienna.

The new casino is to be located in the city palace of Palais Schwarzenberg, which, said Grand Casino Baden CEO Detlef Brose, provides the “best conditions” for an international-standard casino.

Brose said the aim is to open the casino as soon as possible and suggested that it may take place as early as 2015.

Austrian media is also reporting that gaming giant Novomatic has been given the green light to expand its 400-machine gaming hall in the Prater area of the city into a full-scale casino and to develop another casino property in Lower Austria.

The move will create new competition for Casinos Austria, which previously held the monopoly for casino gaming in the country. Century Casinos, meanwhile, confirmed that its own licence bid had been unsuccessful.
